What is spatial reasoning?
Spatial reasoning is the ability to picture, turn and compare shapes in your mind. In 1971 Roger Shepard and Jacqueline Metzler showed that people mentally rotate objects at a steady speed - the more an object is turned, the longer it takes to compare. Strong spatial skills are linked with success in engineering, architecture, surgery, design and the sciences.
- Mental rotation - which shape is the same, only turned?
- Mirror images - spot the one that has been flipped.
- Orientation - directions, reflections and cubes.
Sample questions
Two example questions in the style of the Spatial Reasoning Test. Tap an answer to check it.
Example 1. You face south and turn 90 degrees to your right. Which way are you facing?
Turning right from south brings you to west.
Example 2. Which capital letter looks the same in a mirror held beside it (flipped left-right)?
A is symmetrical left to right, so its mirror image is identical. B, C and R all face the other way in a mirror.
